Fritz Alfred Behrendt's career as a cartoonist began after a tumultous period
including membership in a Dutch resistance movement which led to imprisonment
by the SS, a stint in the Dutch army, and imprisonment by the East Berlin State
Security Service which accused him of Titoism. After Behrendt's release, he
returned to Amsterdam and began his cartooning career. Besides his publication
in journals throughout the world, he works for Amnesty International, the Red Cross
environmental protection organizations, and Dutch television. He has won many
prizes and been exhibited worldwide. Behrendt has been International Consultant
of the Study Centre for Cartoons and Caricatures of the University of Canterbury
in Kent, England, Consul of the Dutch Militant Museum in Delft, and prime mover
behind the "Galerie Journalistischer Zeichner" in the Cultutral Center in Amsterdam.
