Glasnost in Cartoons is the first major exhibition in the United States of the best of contemporary Russian and former-Soviet cartoons and graphics. These memorable images satirize the recent years of dramatic upheaval in the ex-USSR. Until recently many of the finest artists were unable to have their work published or exhibited; others were imprisoned. These artists share a passion for expression of the human condition; their graphic symbolism is sophisticated, bitterly satiric. Although often witty in Western terms, the work exhibits a quality unique to the Russian experience. Glasnost in Cartoons, previewed at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., and opened at Ohio State University. |
